Alveoloplasty

Alveoloplasty is a procedure that shapes the bone that supports your teeth. Alveolar bone is part of the ridge of the jaw that holds the teeth in place. After removing teeth, this bone can be very sharp. Sharp bone can be very irritating to patients that wear dentures.

The procedure can also be done as part of a periodontal osseous surgery procedure. In this case, the bone surrounding the teeth has become malformed because of the damage related to periodontal disease. The malformed bone can facilitate food getting trapped between the teeth and under the gums.

When done in conjunction with the extraction of teeth, a bone file is often used to smooth and shape the sharp edges of the exposed bone. With periodontal osseous surgery, the shaping is often done with high speed handpieces but can also be done with specially designed periodontal bone files.

The alveoloplasty procedure can be performed with any of our anesthesia options. At your consultation, Dr. Jim Culver will go over the best option that is suited for your particular needs.
